The cost of parking freight wagons has risen 2.5-fold
Since the start of 2025, the cost of parking freight wagons has risen 2.5-fold — to 23,000–24,000 roubles a month. The cause is a shortage of storage space amid a surplus of rolling stock and a 7.3% drop in loadings on the Russian Railways network.
Gondola car rental rates are also falling: in August they dropped by 25–32%. On a number of routes the profitability of coal haulage fell to zero.
Around 400,000 idle wagons are sidelined on the network, while the east of the country acutely lacks space to store them. Analysts expect the situation to improve only when coal and construction-cargo exports grow.
